Travel Stories February 2, 2026

Most people think visiting Ooty is expensive and needs a long vacation plan. But honestly, Ooty can be explored in a very simple and budget-friendly way. You can do it low budget or luxury. It is totally your choice.

This blog is our real travel story of a one-day Ooty explore trip from Kerala, using trains, buses, and a local sightseeing package. It was not a long trip. It was more like a quick weekend escape with just two nights and one full day.

From Kerala to Coimbatore: Night Journey

We started our journey from Kerala and reached Coimbatore by train around 1:00 AM. Since it was late night, we did not want to roam outside.

We rested at the railway station dormitory. If your budget is very tight, you can also use the AC waiting room, which is safe and comfortable for a few hours. After some rest and freshening up, we were ready for the next part of the journey.

Early Morning to Ooty via Bus

Early morning, we went to Gandhipuram Bus Stand and caught a bus to Ooty via Mettupalayam.

There is also another option:

  • Train from Coimbatore to Mettupalayam
  • Then toy train from Mettupalayam to Ooty

But this option takes more time. Since we had only one day, we chose the bus route, which was faster and convenient.

We reached Ooty around 9:00 AM.

Breakfast and Choosing a Sightseeing Package

After reaching Ooty, we had breakfast and then headed near Ooty Railway Station. This area has many local package operators.

They offer sightseeing packages covering:

  • Ooty
  • Pykara
  • Coonoor

We chose the Pykara sightseeing package. It was affordable and perfect for a one-day trip.

A small group of around 15 people was formed, and we started the sightseeing in a mini bus.

The package covered some really good spots:

  • Rose Garden
  • Pine Forest
  • Pykara Lake
  • Wenlock Downs
  • Filmy Chakkar area
  • Pykara Waterfalls

Every place had its own vibe. Green views, cool climate, and relaxed travel. It never felt rushed.

Boat Ride at Pykara Lake

At Pykara Lake, we decided to do a boat ride. We spoke with our co-travellers, and everyone was okay with it. Because we went as a group, the boat ride came at an affordable rate.

The boat ride experience was honestly one of the highlights of the trip. Calm water, hills around, and cool wind. Totally worth it.

Lunch, Tea Break, and Local Shopping

The package included:

  • Lunch break
  • Evening tea break

After sightseeing, they gave us some time for local shopping. Small shops, chocolates, tea powders, souvenirs.

By evening, the bus dropped us back near Ooty Railway Station.

Return Journey: Ooty to Kerala

We had dinner around 7:00 PM and then went to Ooty Bus Stand. From there, we caught a bus back to Coimbatore.

We reached Coimbatore Railway Station by auto around 11:00 PM. Again, we waited in the AC waiting room until our train time.

Our train was at 3:00 AM, and by 10:00 AM, we were back home in Kerala.

  • Used railway dormitory and waiting rooms
  • One-day sightseeing package saves time and money

We used 2 nights and 1 day in total. That’s it.
